Screenwriter Jake Wade Wall ( Amusement) takes two familiar premises and smashes ‘em together. In a sick, gross, visually unpleasant way, but funny all the same. Oh, and like its predecessors, Cabin Fever 3is kind of funny.
In other words, once you’re infected in a Cabin Fever movie, it won’t be long before you become a quivering mass of rotting flesh and lumpy sores that prays for the sweet release of a quick demise. (Kudos to horror-lovin’ composer Kevin Riepl, for example, as well as DP Norman Li, and the make-up crew!)Īs you should know by now, the Cabin Fever movies are about a horrific flesh-eating virus that is as expeditious as it is carnivorous.

Plus it has some of those indie flick intangibles that actually help when the movie struggles in other departments. That’s not to say that the slow-starting, frequently predictable Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero is some sort of miniature classic, but if you liked Part 1 and you struggled through Part 2, you’ll certainly find a few meaty morsels of splatter-laden lunacy in Part 3. So surely there’s some gas left in this franchise’s tank, right? The sequel has gone on to earn a small but vocal fanbase, however, and Eli Roth’s original squirm-fest continues to bring in new horror geeks all the time. Arguably the only weak movie in Ti West’s filmography (and he’s not a big fan of it himself), Cabin Fever 2was the victim of endless studio tinkering, release delays, and really sloppy post-production decisions.
In fairness the early scenes inside the research lab were semi decent but the rest of the movie wasn't.Let’s just get it out of the way from the beginning: it’d be really hard to make a worse Cabin Fever (2002) sequel than Cabin Fever 2 (2009). What this all boils down to is that "Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero" was not a good movie and a bit of a slog to keep watching. This is down to many things including that not one character is likeable so in the end you don't care if anyone gets off the island alive or unaffected. Whilst you have the flesh eating virus which is the connection the only other connection is if there is an attractive actress there will be at least an underwear shot and in one case a topless scene.īasically what I am saying is that "Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero" is not only cliche but poorly done cliche with nothing to make it enjoyable. And then on the other hand we have the typical young friends getting high and getting laid in a remote location. On one hand we have the dark, atmospheric scenes in the research lab which features the over use of slow motion and close ups.
But then "Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero" is just your basic virus, horny teens on a get away combination movie and it is so generic and devoid of originality that there is nothing which makes it stand out from the crowd.Īctually that is a lie because "Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero" feels like the work of two directors hacked together to try and make a movie. When thanks to Porter's frustration the virus escapes the island becomes a battleground as Marcus and his friends not only have to deal with those who become infected by the virus but also those who aren't.įirst things first and I have never been a huge fan of the "Cabin Fever" movies and felt the original, which many were impressed by, was overrated but compared to "Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero" the original almost seems Oscar worthy. The trouble is that the island is not abandoned as at an old research facility scientists are holding Porter (Sean Astin), a carrier of a deadly virus, against his will as he may also end up being the cure. Marcus (Mitch Ryan) is about to marry the attractive and wealthy Kate (Claudette Lalí) so his old friends plan to take him for one last hoorah with a bachelor party on an abandoned island.
